Identifying the profile and the specific training and support needs of employee board-level representatives in MNCs and SEs was one of the objectives of a workshop organised by ETUI at the Runö Centre in Sweden. Representatives from national trade unions, trade union training centres and trade union-related foundations and institutes exchanged information about their practices and debated how resources, methods and materials could be made available and what kind of cooperation could be established within the framework of the EWPCC.

Venue: Helsingör, LO-skolen (Denmark)

The Education Department of the European Trade Union Institute and the European Worker Participation Competence Centre organised a workshop on ‘A European dimension to the training of employee board-level representatives’ from 17 to 19 March 2010 at LO-skolen, Helsingør, Denmark. The workshop gathered employee board-level representatives in SEs and MNCs, as well as representatives from training institutes connected to trade unions.

Since its first publication, this book on the state of play in European Works Councils has become a key reference tool and this newly revised and updated version will prove invaluable to anyone seeking both quantitative information and understanding of the issues surrounding the formation and operation of EWCs. All relevant data is presented in a total of 161 figures, all of them accompanied by explanatory text.

The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), in reaction to the austerity measures in force in a number of European countries, is sponsoring a major European mobilisation on 29 September, with support from all its member organisations. Around 100 000 people are expected to take to the streets in Brussels and protest actions will also be held in different European countries. more

In total, 21 SEs have been added to the database in the two months since the previous update. At the time of writing, the ECDB (SE Factsheets) provides information on 622 established and 19 planned SEs. Two new and three previously registered companies were added to the ‘normal’ category. The three recently established ‘normal’ SEs were all registered in Germany and formed by conversion.
To summarise the current numbers (July 2010 figures in brackets), there are:
622 (601) established SEs, of which:

• 157 (151) normal;
• 79 (83) empty;
• 316 (290) UFO;
• 70 (77) shelf.
